What oil do u prefer for 2,9 vr6? 5w40 or 10w40-60...
I always used 5w40 but I am not sure if it is ok...

I use Castrol Magnatech 5w40. VW approved etc.
Great oil for the engine. Did tear my engine down, nothing to say about it being the wrong oil for the engine.
If you are curious... Ask VAG. They can tell you what viscosity and brand to use.

I have 5w40 castrol today, and the motor is somethimes noise on idle. So I ask if 10w40 isn

the vr engines are a bit noisy in my ears.
5w-40, 10w-40 is the way to go on a pretty stock NA vr6

The VR6 isnt the most quiet engine in the known universe and sometimes I can ask myself if there is something wrong with it.
But I have teared it down and checked and everything turns out to be in ok condition.
So there is always some noises coming from the engine. Always.

in comparison to a g60 the vr6 is very silent....

10w60 is way to thick for the chain tensioner.
and not needed in a stock or light modified engine.

In 2.9 I had Valvoline 10W60.And everything was OK.Silence and and the oil temperature 92, 94 degrees .160-200km/h -104 degrees.
Really, only Valvoline,Milers,Gulf.Milers have oils for racing and normal.

Also depends in part on where you are running it. I run mine in a hot climate and you can run a more viscous oil. In cold climates you may want to run a thinner oil.
Apparently the VR6, being an older engine compared to todays modern ones, prefers more viscous oils, as the piston-sidewall clearances are slightly greater, and lighter grade oils do not coat the cylinders as well.
I would still prefer to use fully synthetic.
